Holo or reverse holo? Check where the light moves
A shiny patch in one photograph cannot reliably identify a finish. It may be glare from the sleeve, while real foil may disappear at that angle. Confirm the set and number first, then inspect the card under a fixed light. The diagrams show inspection areas, not simulated photographs of real foil.
1. Tilt the card, keep the light fixed
Hold the card by its edges over a clean surface. Slowly tilt it left and right, then forward and back. Watch whether a pattern changes within the artwork, around it, or across a larger area. Repeat from another angle before deciding that an apparently flat card has no foil.
If a sleeve creates a bright sheet of reflection, change the viewing angle. Remove it only if you can do so safely. Do not bend, scratch or rub the surface to test it. A short video from a seller can reveal more than a single head-on image.
2. Use the diagram as a starting point
On many conventional holo cards, the artwork window is the main foil area. On many reverse or parallel foil cards, the surrounding design carries the pattern. Non-foil cards lack that changing foil pattern, although their surface can still reflect a lamp. The printed rarity symbol alone does not settle which finish you own.
3. Check the release’s exceptions
These outlines are not a rule for every era. Full-art cards and special treatments can extend beyond a conventional artwork box. Pokémon’s Scarlet & Violet design article explains parallel foil and its inverted expansion-code box; use that as a clue for that design family, not a test for all older cards.
Prismatic Evolutions adds another distinction: the publisher documents Poké Ball and Master Ball background patterns. Merely selecting “reverse” can therefore leave an important detail unresolved. Look up the exact release and a matching reference before choosing the printing.
4. Separate finish, condition and price
Scratches are wear, not a different finish. A foil pattern does not authenticate a card or assign a grade. In Card Scan Lab, compare the available printing options with the physical card; leave the identification uncertain when the photo does not show enough. A missing quote for one printing does not make the base printing’s price applicable. There is no universal rule that reverse is worth more than holo.
